about

This song won the 2018 Illawarra Folk Festival songwriting competition, where you had to write a song based on the line "Start your own Revolution, cut out the middleman" from Billy Bragg's song 'waiting for the great leap forwards'.

lyrics

9am on polling day
I am talking to a candidate
who fills me with dismay
And meanwhile a thousand miles away
There are others far less fortunate
Who don't have food or water yet
So why have you got nothing to say?

And if you won't start it for me I will start my own revolution
You know there has to be a better way out there
And if you won't stand up for them
I fill fight for a better solution
Because this country doesn't need more millionaires
It just needs ordinary people to care

And then a man walks through the throng
He wants to make them all accountable
Cos what they're doing is wrong
And he says "one world we all belong
And there is no place for racists
You should be ashamed to show your faces"
And his words are ringing out so clear and strong

And if you won't start it for me...

And we've got to hold on to our hearts
Feel the change is coming, so let it start
With a little love we can turn this all around
Or could the last man standing please turn out the light

And if you won't start it for me...
